Battery and AC Backup Options
Battery Backup
The RPS Controller, when set to BAT mode, will charge the batteries and the pump will run off battery power rather than solar power directly. There is a PWM solar charge controller inside your pump controller that facilitates charging, prevents overcharging, and prevents discharging batteries to a damaging level.
* Our PRO Systems do not require battery backup. The control box includes an auto-switcher, which can automatically switch between solar and AC power.
AC Generator Backup
We don’t talk about it enough – but you can use AC grid or generator power to backup any RPS solar pump. Great for those “what if” scenarios, just one more way to build in peace of mind.
Any 3″ or 2″ solar pump (RPS 200, 400, 800, 400V, 800V, 400N) requires the AC to DC Converter to power the pump using AC power. The Converter comes standard with a 110V three prong plug, but you can swap the cord and switch it over to use with 220V power. Every generator out there that puts out 220V also puts out 110V, you’ll have no issue finding a power source that works.
Pro Systems – Auto Switcher
Our PRO SYSTEMS include an auto-switcher in the 2.2 kW Rated Solar Controller (which takes DC Voltage from solar panel array + Auto-Switch to run with 220v Grid or Generator when there is not enough solar energy available).

Solar VS AC/Windmill/Generator
Solar Pumps: Because solar pumps use only the energy from the sun to run your pump, fuel costs are zero! Once you have your solar panels, there are no more costs to run the system on a day-to-day basis. Solar pumps require less labor and maintenance compared to AC pumps. Solar pumps, especially with our 2 year warranty and lifetime customer service, won’t let you down. Overall, they’re a great choice for any homestead or farm as a solution for irrigation, watering livestock or supplying water to your off-grid homestead. No hauling fuel, no climbing windmills!
AC Pumps: Require the grid or gas for generators. Not energy independent. Reliant on outside energy source. Don’t work in any longer grid-down scenarios.
Windmills: Big upfront and maintenance costs and labor.
Cheap Plastic Pumps: There are cheap poorly-made solar pumps with bad reviews that make all solar-powered pumps look bad. These are not rated for continuous use, often only last 30-60 days and lack warranty and post-sale customer service.

Will my solar pump work on a cloudy day?
A lot of times people ask us, “What happens when it’s cloudy outside? Will I still have access to water with a solar-powered pump?” The short answer is – absolutely, yes! A few dreary days don’t have to mean no water. With our RPS solar pumps, you’re always covered!
You may have heard from the neighbor that solar pumps will shut off if there’s even a cloud in the sky – that’s actually a myth. RPS Solar Pumps will operate under cloudy conditions without any outside help from backup power. Even if the weather is rainy and overcast, the system will still operate, just at decreased power. So if on a normal rainy day the pump is rated to pump 5 gallons per minute, maybe you should expect 2-3 gallons per minute under cloudy conditions, depending on the severity of clouds.
